Trackers for the PC

Post by tomsk »

Anyone want to suggest the best and easiest PC music tracker, either PD or professional ? I just fancy messing around with an easy to use and intuitive tracker, having got a taste for it recently using the excellent Nitro tracker on the DS (of all platforms!!).
Thanks

ReNoise is supposed to be the king indeed, having a far more modern approach to tracking than any other software.
But it costs money (49 euro), and is unessceseraly heavy and complex for what I use it for.

So I still prefer Modplug Tracker! It works almost identically to my old favorite FastTracker and does everything it did, and ofcourse more. So that is my recomandation if you're not going with modern sequencers.

(Modplug Player is also the best (my opinion here) player for mod-files)

Not just the abilities of the software are important, but it have to run on your OS. What kind of OS do you use?
XP? Vista?

On Vista I can run a very good tracker. This is the Skale Tracker 0.81. Try it! You can download it from here:

I recommend Renoise. Yes, it costs money, but it doesn't cost a lot - especially not when you look at what you get for your money. And there is a demo-version, you can try before buy. I've done all my music in Renoise between 2002-2008.

Thanks guys - lots of good suggestions. I must confess it's hard to stray from Renoise (yup, I now have the demo) with such fine artists as Makke and Trace using it to compose, but I'll give them all a spin. I guess it depends how deep I want to go and how much (if) I want to spend!

Also using Renoise :)
Modplug is the best freeware tracker IMO. If you are doing XM's, it's pretty accurate for what I've tested with it.

Renoise indeed. I used most trackers and I must say renoise is definetly the way to go. Best money I ever spent.

I agree - very good. But did anyone notice the person attributed to mastering >?? A certain Mathew Gray.....? Could it be ? Probably not! But I'm sure someone will put me right.:)

Nah - No piss-poor girl bands in his client list, so it can't be OUR Matt Gray...
