Micro Rhythm - Commodore 64 sample player and instructions

For all I know, this was the first easy, dirt cheap virtual drum box any kid could have used to beef up his bedroom studio.

Any little brother's junior EMI of the time, with its Alba hifi and cassette 4-tracker. And Commodore 64 code, your budget VSTi equivilent right there. And until big brother slung you his ST a few years later, the upcoming maestro could've hopefully badgered Mum and Dad for the Sound Expander by Christmas.

Measly now but think what there was a decade back for tuck shop money.

Using this software certainly saved money over buying the likes of a hardware sampler. In those days the sound quality seemed virtually the same anyway, with the C64 also giving you a bigger display.

If software already exists online I don't usually write about it. But this one was worthy of a special mention and nobody seems to have copied the instructions. These days there can be good possibilities for sampling and I certainly recommend downloading and keeping your own copies - though the 'suite' of Micro software seems to be the same code under different names.

Package design oddly different to my copy: http://www.gamebox64.com/cgi-bin/displa ... archcrit=M

Yes, there are different sample sets. There's also Microrhythm Plus, but I've not used either.

I never knew about Plus and I couldn't find it with Google either. But I just love that people were able to even do this kind of thing with home computers 25 years ago, especially with the full drum range for a mere tenner.

No doubt in a musical family, big brother's sampler or expensive MIDI box would have put even more great sounds at your fingertips. Just this evening I enjoyed testing the MIDI drums with my Commodore 64:

EDIT: 'Plus' is actually the disco one.

MicroRhythm was great. Good old Simon Pick.

I Really wish someone would do a VST compatible tracker these days with the same, ultra simple, layout.

It's easy enough to plot rhythms in your sequencer's piano roll, then load selected bits into your sampler.

Crumbs, I forgot to include my compilation copy: http://www.leftiness.org/compilation.d64

I always thought the guy on the front of the pack looked a lot like Gary Penn...

And for softdrums on the 64, I should also put Jam It in my inbox.
