Reaping the Ebay harvest

Post by Commie_User »

I'm surprised there's no section to highlight interesting odds and ends for sale. So perhaps I should have a go.

First off, here's a generic C64 music search on both Ebay and Ebid: http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_from=R40 ... Categories

http://uk.ebid.net/perl/main.cgi?go=1&m ... +music&go=

http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=comm ... m270.l1313

A few nice music packages but nothing in the way of anything special, such as a Sound Expander interface or Sequential keyboard. But good idea I think to have people drop in one or two interesting sale items from anywhere. You never know, barring the possibility that some of us may keep a few choice items back, we could all co-operate in boosting each others' collections.

Image

Indeed, as I already purchased Make Music With Mistertronic before I had the idea, I can still say it's here for everyone else to access if they like: http://noname.c64.org/csdb/release/?id=64229 . (I recall that software being part of a larger game creator package anyway.)

Mind, there are still bits and pieces usually unavailable, particularly hardware, which could do well in a good home. And if one of us wouldn't have the money, somebody else might. And who knows how many units end up junked when the seller can't be rid of it.

I might fancy the Commodore 64 information book and tape. Not really necessary but when you want the novelties you still may bid for them: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Commodore-64- ... 500wt_1156

Music 64 looks a nice buy too, but again only to pad out a collectors' pile: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Commodore-64- ... 548wt_1156

Image

Good condition disk drive (by the look of it): http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Commodore-154 ... 500wt_1156

Will you have a bid yourself? I compulsively-bought 10 or so a few months back so I'm in no dire need of extra ones yet. (But I'm not so sure now, I don't like the look of one of the the 1541s connected to the MSSIAH computer....)

Are you telling me this joker thinks £103 Sterling is a good price to ask for a single old SID chip... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Commodore-64- ... 3cb7acc275

Right, that's it, game over. I'm looking at a circuit-bent Atari 2600 music machine now.....

No MIDI attachment at the moment but samples are available: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ATARI-2600-SA ... 997wt_1139

VIDEO RECORDERS

Why bother with home videotape? Because it's great. The best most of us made do with were Ferguson Videostar machines or impressively good yet budget Amstrads; and these were actually pretty fine. But for £400 maximum you can now buy the near-broadcast standard monsters which cost many times that back in the day. These are good because tapes deteriorate a damn site slower than discs and tape-recorded programming needs no 'rendering' and other digitally-related stuff.

And if you've got a nuclear bunker's worth of old tapes you can record and watch them in higher fidelity than before.

These are the ones I estimate to be above par or at least very good:

Bit dated though: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SONY-SVO-1520 ... 41599987ab

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Panasonic-NV- ... 2312e27868

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/THOMSON-vph70 ... 415b73c02d

For me, it's a toss-up between numbers 2, 5 and 6.

Nice topic :)

I have a few polish collegues here at the office. When I bought my latest C-64 I asked one of them to check polish online marketplaces for me. In general very low prices (atleast compared to norwegian marketplaces). His wife picked up the C-64 in Poland and brought it to Norway the next time she was going to visit my collegue here. Needless to say, she was proud showing her C-64 at the airport security while everybody else were flashing their lousy laptops :)

Thanks. I always try to put a few interesting bits in. And I figure that it's not just myself benefitting. They've actually made me an administrator on here now so keep an eye out for new pieces.

I plan two new articles, both requiring extra research input from CR users. One will be about data transfer and the other self-help software for the C64.

I did hear there was some kind of 1990s Commodore boom in places like Poland. It seems that after the fall of the workers' paradise, people found that computers were available to suit many budgets. Though given the poverty of Poland at that time, the Commodore 64 would have appealed to the wallet more than a PC.

Here's one Polish Commodore site and a collection of Polish games: http://c64power.com/

http://translate.google.com/translate?h ... 24,GBSB:en

http://www.gamebase64.com/search.php?a= ... 18&h=0&p=0

I would imagine one advantage of starting on the Commodore just as most others had finished meant that more games were available and at a higher standard. The Polish games can be very slick. And thanks to the Internet, today you can grab most titles for free before porting them to disk, tape or loading directly to the 64 itself.

Though I already have a Centronics interface, the cheap Commie printers and ribbons mean a saving over buying a replacement third-party printer. (Except, perhaps, a Star as I think I still have a pile of unopened ribbons. But a Commie one is more authentic.)

Thanks for that. And with Google translate I can understand what's happening. Although my mother is Polish I still need the English translation for details.

Image

Interesting machine. I knew they had the 'breadbin' design with the 64c colour scheme but I can't remember why. I also can't remember whether the innards are the C64c revision either. But unfortunately I can't bid on it as the site is not Paypal compatible and they need to check my details on registering for some reason.

(Though, at least for my own reference, I can try and pay by Visa card without needing to sign in: http://allegro.pl/help_item.php?zoom=N&item=3149

Most peculiar.)

Extension cable: http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_from=R40 ... +extension

Action Replay: http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=nes+ ... m270.l1313

MIDINES: http://www.wayfar.net/

NES Game Genie: http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=nes+ ... m270.l1313

Mega Drive Game Genie and Action Replays are also available.

Now then. Even without MIDINES, the Nintendo can yield a rich harvest of sounds to sample. Random cheat codes can often mangle game noises or sometimes 'solo' individual channels. I produced a stack of codes for the Mario games as a teenager and I'm sure these can be used; I especially remember using a code which solo'd the drum samples in Super Mario 3. With the accompanying 'holy trinity' of Plogue Chiptunes, feature-laiden emulators and MIDINES, the Game Genie-equipped Nintendo can enjoy a new lease of life it probably always deserved.

Image

And it'll look good in the studio too.

For the SNES, the Action Replay and Game Genie can work their own random code magic. On top of that, Mario Paint provides a unique GUI-driven composition suite. The kiddie-level, mouse-operated music software isn't essential but it certainly looks good too. Plus it provides a few extra nice sounds for recording.

A SNES MIDI box was begun but sadly never finished. Luckily, samplers never suffered the same fate.

Going to need an HDMI switchbox myself soon...

And seeing those video recorders, did you know about the Video Fast Loader (VFL) cartridge? Load and save C64 games to VHS cassette. Interesting piece of hardware.
