- the technical trouble thread is marked as "global" and thus accessible through all forums

- I like avatars, but I don't like oversize avatars. Compromise: 120 x 90 pixels, 15kb. Enough to contain a 4:3 image that matches the rank image width. Btw, 25kb size was also a compromise, I used to have it down at 5k not long ago. Imagine a messageboard page with 10 different posts with a 25kb image each = 250kb, plus signature pics. Too much just for reading a mere text based forum page, but of course this is the worst case.

- The lowest screen resolution that is still pretty common these days is 800x600. Many notebooks have 800 height widescreen displays.

LMan: Well that's a compromise! :) ... now I'm an old pixel graphic man from the AMIGA days, and I'm a hell of a perfectionist when it comes to these topics  ... I just had this picture in my mind that it would look more "straight" with a width that match the ranking graphics... that was the main concern I had... The height was mainly because it's impossible to fit a large number of avatars in a square field... Most portraits of things and people look much better with this added height. Unfortunately, with a hight of just 90, it would make it worse in a way because most avatars are portraits, and frantically, a portrait format IS higher than it's wide. So even if it's a compromise, it'll not solve anything in my point of view, but to make the "cropping" problem even worse. It would be more helpful to keep the current width, and instead increase the height then in my point of view. The point for me is, that if you take a normal digital camera, it seem to default to this aspect ratio.

I've checked, and a 120*160 avatar compressed to jpg at compression ratio 20, fill approx. 6-7kb, so you could safely put the size limit down to 8-10kb.

Here are 6 avatars I've done in 120*160... all fit in 6-7kb:

An alternative could be to have a size of 90*105? ... This cut a bit of the aspect ratio in height, but still looks good as a portrait, and is not so small that the graphics get cramped... would not fit the width of the ranking graphics though, but if it could just be centered below it, It would look nice :) ... another solution could be to make it 120*140... this is the same aspect ratio as just suggested, just with a width of 120 to fit the ranking gfx.

I have limited the Avatar on my Board because we have many who are still on dial-up.

Analog-X: you avatar thief! ... had you been a bit creative, and placed a C64 backdrop on the skull, I'd have given you the thumbs up!

Well, dial-up or not, the larger size now is easily compressed to less than 25kb as was the earlier size... can see that LMan has lowered this to 15kb... this is very well! ...

LMan: THANX! now I can rest asured that Remix64 look even better :worship:

Now you only need to center it below the ranking graphics to be perfect! :eekout:

LMan: what RGB value is the background here in the forums? ... I'm trying to perfect my avatar, so that the outline is the exact same color... it's not totaly white color I can see.

Edit: ARGH! I did not see, that it changes every other post  now that is a bit hard to perfect then... hehe

Edit edit: nope... it was obviously not so difficult to perfect 8)

Analog-X: So basically, that avatar gives us a good estimation of your current mental state? ... no seriously, that sounds like a bad thing...

d'oh, I meant it to be 120 width and 90 height, but I swapped the fields. I see what you mean with portraits, but 120 x 120 is indeed too big for my taste. Final decision: 100x100, centered below the rank image.

LMan: DEAL! ... that suffice for my hard-designed new avatar to still fit within, and that's fine with me! ... and thanx for listening :)

EDIT: ARGH! the image I made is not 100 in height! it's 120 :? ... and I was so happy with the 90*120 format :argh: don't do this to me LMan! ... :?
