Tried to give a synthetic guitar a bit of life due velocity and pitchbend (3:21)... Epic Fail... :(

Yeah but it has a nice SIDdy feel to it. Synthetic guitars have a charm of their own.

Cool tune.

What you using for your guitars amok?

I use music labs realstrat/realguitar and they work surprisingly well. It can be a bit fiddly setting up the automation to change things about to get slides etc but with a bit of work you can get quite a real sounding guitar - observe -

The tune is nice, indeed!

As far as my experience goes, using synth guitars is always a fail, unless you try to think a different way about them. They do their intended purpose very badly due to full lifelessness. Too many player-dependent sonic features change in a real guitar sound that is impossible to capture.

Used as component sound they can do wonders here and there. Having them in the mix under the line they can beef up certain type of riffs - but only when used along with real guitar tracks.

Still, the best way is to use samples or the real stuff

Funny thing, but Martin Galway did a far better job on capturing the essence than any VSTi :) Listening to Times of Lore main tune still amazes me, even after all of them years.

RealGuitar sounds fairly real if you make chords with it, especially if it's buried in the mix. :p

But I'd rather get someone to play a real guitar if I were to use it in a proper tune.

I also tried making a song with guitars:

There are various VSTi out there to create some nice rhythmic guitars. The problem is to create a lead guitar for a solo for example. It always sounds sterile and lifeless imho.

There's a simple answer to that, marry Romeo Knight and your problems will be solved.

The synth guitar sounded distinct. A very professional-sounding work.

(Mind, that chatting running through it irritated a little, but I like the music.)

Jan Hammer! He's my synth guitar idol. Makes a very nice guitar impersonation.

Yeah, quite synthish guitars, but nice tune :) . I dunno what prog/VST you use for the guitar but you could try eliminating or slowing down the tremolo. In my experience the best synth guitars are the simplest ones. I've made a track using a synth guitar here on Remix WIP (it's remix of First Strike). Now I've posted a couple of new WIP remixes that also use synth guitars (mostly electric) (under 'manganoid') and the best IMHO is the ReFX Slayer - simple and yet awesome. Hear them out. Yeah in most cases, synth guitars are good for rythm or powerchords, but with a bit of tweaking and workarounds you can get quite good results. AND the most important thing for getting a good electric sound are the AMPS, I've heard some quite awesome tunes that use only a SAW and Pulse signals processed through amps and still sound like guitars.
