The best MP3-encoder?

Post by westerling »

Hi

I wonder if someone who has tried a few (or many) mp3-encoders could tell me which one is the best. I´ve tried RazorLame. It´s OK, but maybe there are others that are better :?:

I'm using WinLAME which does the trick.. It gives exellent quality.. But don't think it's better than Razorlame since they probably are using the same encoding lib..

But I'm beginning to use OGG instead.. It gives impressive quality.. (at least that's what I think..) :)

Lame is the best (free) mp3 encoder.

But Fraunhofer is at least a little better (not that I'd hear that - that's what people say :) )

Lame 3.90 used with Audiograbber or EAC set at 192kbps or with a variable bit-rate is usually the best.
It's also the most popular setting used on the MP3 scene.

SoundCloud - all sorts

I use Exact Audio Copy + Lame v3.92

You can download latest Lame from free-codecs

Exact Audio Copy lets me convert my CD Collection into MP3 so I can take them on the road with me. But at the same time.

If I create something in .wav I can just drag it into the EAC program and it will convert it to MP3 for me.

And both are Free.

LAME VBR has consistently been found to be the best quality, but quite big file sizes (and I am suspicious of the stereo spectrum being slightly reduced).

Fraunhoffer/Audioactive is STILL the tops for 128kb. Don't use the FHG codec in Cool Edit or Music Match 'cos they are BUGGY!

OT/ But if you can avoid it, use something else, like ogg vorbis.

OK, now I got something to think about. Thank You all. I´ll get back if I try something of what You´ve suggested, and if I notice any difference.

Never really understood the part about variabel bitrate at mp3 encoding as that's what mp3 is all about (or I imagine :P )...
It probably reduces those places the codec figures it's least needed with high bitrate and gains where hifreq's are used, but still I prefer constant bitrate at sound to avoid bass artifacts, or other places..
Also running at slower machines streams I recon constant is more stable under decoding (again guessing)
