Not really, I never really got the ST: didn't have one, and when used, seemed... underwhelming.

The Atari 400/800XL and the C64 are where my affections really lay (with the honorable mentions to the Pet 4032, the Oric (which I wanted at some point very badly because of the sound commands in basic and it had a better keyboard than the Speccy), and the BBC B.

What was wrong with the ST? What did you do on the PET?

And do you have any photos of all that lovely gear plumbed in? Somehow I really love those old period shots.

And I certainly think there should have been some cheap PET MIDI sequencer back in the day. Huge numbers of PETs were sold, many in schools, by 1983, and I should think more than a few music teachers would've wanted them when the more eggheady teachers moved up to IBMs and the like.

The PET was at school, and I haven't any photos of me with the Atari 800. The ST: I never owned one, and I never fell in love with it. Fine machine, I'm sure, though! One of the Pets had a hi-res graphics card, but we only ever used it for doing Moire patterns

Bet yours was a proper listing though.

A VIC manual and some Usborne books were all I had for my PET 2001. Everyone else had the SNES and Mega Drive when I continued being happy playing with my own little programs. (And like a Pavlovian reflex, I still hunger for thick toast with butter and Bovril every time I read that, as I ate piles of 'em while tinkering before school.)

Yes, the Atari was a clever machine which deserves more coverage.






Though they dropped the ball with no 2600 backwards compatibility. Upgraders and newbies alike would have enjoyed packing their game shelves with iconic classics such as Yar's Revenge. Or obscure curiosities like Tunnel Runner.

I dunno, it was a huge slot on the 2600...quite difficult to fit into the form factor (and there was no such possibility of emulation when the Atari 400 was first created)...

According to Wiki, all the new system would have needed was another TIA. And the cart slot was actually quite small.
