DeepSID and Chrome 89 / Edge 89

Post by Waz »

Good afternoon folks,

Just a heads up - if using Chrome 89 or Edge 89, DeepSID's playback suffers badly due to new changes put into the Chromium engine.

If like me you find JCH's site very useful, he's now filed a bug in Chromium - please star at the top to increase the chance of them looking at it and fixing it - and let's help other SID fans.

https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/is ... id=1187016

In the meantime, Firefox 86.0 works flawlessly with no issues, so well worth switching over to that in the meantime.

An update for everyone:

* Chrome developers had to bring forward a security patch to fix a race condition to do with WebAudio
* This patch was brought forward due to breaches happening, so was patched into Chrome 89
* Patch details - https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.c ... 2021-21165
* Other authors using WebAudio and scriptprocessor node functions had come forward to say their audio is borked too
* Chrome developers have now issued a fix, and this fix is currently in the Chrome nightly build (Chrome Canary) version 91.0.4455.0
* I've road tested this with DeepSID with this version of Canary, everything is super smooth
* For those of us not bleeding edge, I've asked the question when this will be phased into the Chrome stable branch. The Chrome devs are hoping soon but need to test security against the audio fix.

If you really don't mind going bleeding edge, you can run the Canary (dev) version of Chrome alongside your current stable branch if you wish.

Re: DeepSID and Chrome 89 / Edge 89 - FIXED

Post by Waz »

Good news all,

Google have finally admitted that the issue was of their own making, and although it had been fixed in the dev (Canary) versions of Chrome 91, the public release of Chrome 91 is out.

I'm delighted to report that DeepSID works correctly without issues. Updating MS Edge (Chromium) to version 91.0.864.37 also works.

Thanks to all who kindly helped JCH with the bug report.
