(Off topic) PSP Slim C64 emulator help

Post by tomsk »

Sorry - I really didn't want to post so off topic but if you're reading this them I'm hoping you may be able to help (and it does have a sort of C64 connection)

As some of you may know, my technical 'skills' are legendary, and my little lad wants some more stuff to bang on his PSP Slim that he got for Xmas. Now, I've managed to get some Mp3 and convert a few of his DVDs but I cannot fathom out how to use the homebrew stuff - or indeed whether I can or not.

His PSP Slim is brand new and is system software version 3.71. and in the game section it says PSP update ver 2.60

I downloaded eloader for 3.71 which is supposed to allow use of homebrew game/utilities and put it in it's correct directory. When run it play a sound restarts and responds "THE GAME COULD NOT BE STARTED 80020148). Bugger.

I've installed PSPVICE (again the 3.71 version) and tried to run that too with the message "This game cannot be started. The data is corrupted". I have deleted and re-installed several different versions to see if that fixes any possible corruption. I have also followed step by steps on other sites but I know some people on here have got it working on their PSP - so if anyone can help, we would very much appreciate it.

I never thought it would come to the day when my kids knew more than me - it's a hard time of life!! ;)

do some reading on afterdawn.

As far as I know you need to downgrade or upgrade the bios in You're PSP to run homebrew, but I could be wrong.

In my Case I went with the Downgrade/Upgrade route.

Yeah - I think that's what I have to do - (the downgrade/upgrade thing). A few people on afterdawn have mentioned this is not to be attempted by novices incase you 'brick' the machine.
Thanks anyway

I can unbrick a PSP or you can make an unbricking unit.

Basic steps of Downgrading goes like this.

1. Identify version of PSP + Hardware.
2. Downgrade to v1.50
3. Upgrade to desired Custom BIOS.

reason for the downgrade is, there is a flaw in v1.50 that allows for upgrading to a custom bios. I use the 3.40 OE-A now outdated, but works great. You will probably install the M33 version.

Hi boddy!

No, it's not an offtopic. And I am in the same situation as you are. First of all, your psp's firmware version is 3.71. The "PSP update ver 2.60" at the game menu you mentioned before means that the UMD game you've put into your psp includes a 2.60 official update, but you don't need it. What you need you should change your firmware version to 3.71 M33-V2 or later. (3.71 M33-V4) These are custom firmwares.
I have 3.71 M33-2 and it works fine for me. It lets you to run ISO games from memory stick or homebrew stuffs.
The firmware modding isn't a simple process so I think you shouldn't try it yourself. A guy I found on the internet do it with my psp for a price. (about 12 euros).

C 64 emu on psp... There are several versions of c64 psp emus on the internet. After you modded your psp you might to find one for yourself. I've found one but I can't force it to run on my psp, so I also haven't any experiences in this thing yet.

BTW: The process name my psp has modded by called Pandora's battery. It is strange but if my understanding is correct it uses the battery's memory??? The process did take about 3 minutes...

Cheers for the assistance Moad'dib - I think I will take your advice and try and find someone who can do the mod (although I wouldn't send it away for someone to mod!!). Basically what Analog said rings true with what I've picked up elsewhere - it's just more often than not these forums seem to be aimed towards people with brains and willpower (something I lack!) and a PhD in how to rip things to bits.

Cheers again guys

I can build Pandora's... its basically a Standard PSP Battery + Memory Duo Pro. With the combination of the Battery + Memory Stick you can downgrade any PSP Regardless of version down to v1.50.

If I lived in the U.K. I would offer to do this for Free for you guys.

Let me know if you need to build a Pandoras Battery or if you decide to do the downgrade/upgrade just run the steps by me, and I'll make sure you are following the correct steps and dont brick it.

I have moded 4 PSP's so far including my own.

That wouldn't be a standard PSP then :) My slime is currently running 3.80 M33-5. Now to find some stuff to do with it, it's like the ps3 just collecting dust. Going to try out that c64 emu.

Everything you'll ever need to know about modding PSP's here (*legal site* - no games downloads, etc):

http://forums.exophase.com/

I'm on 3.77 (I think) and the C64 emulator doesn't work at all with it. I've thought about going back to 3.40, but Playstation emulation is not as compatible (and that's mainly what I use my PSP for)!

My advice: Get a GP2X for C64 emulation - there's no contest!

With 3.40 its a hit and miss for PSX Games. Crash Bandicoot Time Warped doesn't run to well with heavy 3d scenes.

Skull monkeys which is a 2D Platform game wont run at all.

Do you have Skull Monkeys?? If so can you see if it works with you're BIOS?

Maybe I'm the only lucky guy, but c64 stuffs run perfectly on my psp! Games, demos, utils, everything!
So, why should I get a GP2X??? :duh:

Heh, my kids look at me strange cos they don't understand why daddy's playing with these old games with low graphics...
