Just out of curisoity I tried to speed up a song to see how to sound but didnt seem to have any effect.

I un-checked the Auto-Detect Tempo and than bumped up the speed to 180 and saved a midi file but when I listen
to it, it sounds same as when I had it at Auto-Detect Tempo.

Am I going about this the wrong way?

It's been a while since I used this prog.. all the way back to where you had to register this thing.

As far as I recall, setting the tempo should only set the speed of the MIDI file, but not change the speed of the tune at all? ... if I recall right, the SID will always play at the same original speed when the MIDI file is read into a sequencer, but the BPM will be what you set it to during convertion. This way you can easily change the speed in the sequencer instead, and you should be able to match the tempos if you know the BPM of the original and set the speed to be the same... I always had problems converting with this so that the tune was in sync with the BPM...

If you think about it, there is no way SID2MIDI would be able to know the BPM of the tune it converts as no SID carries BPM information... so either you'd have to give it the correct BPM (the speed setting), or SID2MIDI would have to have serious BPM sensing software implemented that would check the manipulation of SID registers that would hint at a BPM... by checking the GATE bits for example, but with so much "squeezing" of the SID that is going on in SID tunes, I don't know if this would be reliable in many situations... GATE bits may be toggled in many weird ways I guess.

Most SIDs though, was called at raster intervals which was always the same duration (though it had more formats than just PAL)... it would be easy to calculate precise BPM values from knowing this... with PAL settings, every vertical blank was at 20ms as far as I recall, and the speed setting was usually done in multiples of this frequency because the music routine was called at frame intervals... so you could have SIDs with 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 etc. ms in between notes.

If my calculations are correct these are the BPMs:

80ms = 750 BPM
100ms = 600 BPM
120ms = 500 BPM
140ms = 428,5 BPM
160ms = 375 BPM
180ms = 333,3 BPM
200ms = 300 BPM
220ms = 272,7 BPM
240ms = 250 BPM
260ms = 230,7 BPM
280ms = 214,2 BPM
300ms = 200 BPM
320ms = 187,5 BPM
340ms = 176,4 BPM
360ms = 166,6 BPM
380ms = 157,8 BPM
400ms = 150 BPM
420ms = 142,8 BPM
440ms = 136,3 BPM
460ms = 130,4 BPM
480ms = 125 BPM
500ms = 120 BPM

520ms = 115,3 BPM
540ms = 111,1 BPM
560ms = 107,1 BPM
580ms = 103,4 BPM
600ms = 100 BPM
620ms = 96,77 BPM
640ms = 93,75 BPM
660ms = 90,90 BPM
680ms = 88,23 BPM
700ms = 85,71 BPM

Please note that some SIDs had other timings if they used the timing registers, and some even run more than once a frame... but most I guess would fit one of these BPMs.

If anyone spots an error in my calculations (or rather my D-Two delay fx processors calculations :lol: ), then please correct me here.

Note also that because of fractions in the BPM, tune may drift out of sync in time... I'm not sure how accurate my D-two FX processor is in showing those fractions. The non-fractional values should be rock-hard stable though.

Most SIDs will probably be within the range of possible BPMs I marked in BOLD characters above. So there is not so many to try out to find the correct speed of a VB framerate SID

As explained earlier in this thread, that should not happen anymore after you re-download the latest file. All older builds contain a bug where this setting is not saved (and is reset frequently since it defaults to "on").
Razmo wrote:As far as I recall, setting the tempo should only set the speed of the MIDI file, but not change the speed of the tune at all?
Yes, of course. If you want to change the speed, you can do that either in your favourite MIDI editor or set the "Scale speed" field to something other than "1.0".
If you think about it, there is no way SID2MIDI would be able to know the BPM of the tune it converts as no SID carries BPM information...
True, hence it attempts at finding out a value that makes sense (and that is not easy to do).

Hey there all, very interested in using this software, but I've since downloaded one of the versions shown here, and it appears to give me the following error:

D:\..\sid2midiw.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

I understand what that suggests, but I thought this was a windows GUI app, I used to have the DOS version long ago, etc, etc..

Any suggestions, or other places to link for the file?

Does someone still have the free version and could provide it to me? Michael's old link to arcor does not work anymore and it seems there is no other way to get the full version anymore.

Thanks!

I uploaded what I have onto my Google Drive:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1Dsrr ... sp=sharing

Includes an older version of sid2midi which has documentation with it.

I definitely found a version of SID2MIDI which had been "unlocked" on the Net recently to send to Marcel. Or did Marcel find it?

Anyway, it's out there.

The version I've shared I think is the unlocked version. Its the one Michael Schwendt himself provided in this thread. However as previous poster mentioned, seems like where the files are hosted is dead.

When I go to help about it says "Unrestricted evaluation copy"

It would be cool to have a group of people take this to sourceforge and improve on it.

Thanks a lot, I'll try it. But wasn't the "evaluation version" the one that is restricted to 1:30 min?

If anybody is interested, a copy of sid2midi, version 0.17.8, can still be found here:

https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=56322

I don't know if there are any limitations to this version. It is an "unrestricted evaluation copy", but I briefly tested it and was able to export a SID as a 300 seconds long midi.

Custom song lengths can be set from the "tools menu"->"options"->"numerical field" connected to "if songlength database is unavailable or disabled, run songs" [the default value is 1:30 min or 180 seconds, but you can change that].

I don't use these kind of conversion tools myself, so I wouldn't know how overall accurate my test conversion file was (I left all conversion settings at their default values, and the midi file sounded okay to me when compared to the original SID), although I can see why this program was liked. It certainly is a useful tool for creating remixes.

Cheers!
