I think with some of these computers, such as C64 and Amiga, we see some decent hardware features for the time. C64, SID and VICII (sprite and scroll), the amiga also had "helper" chips. Today one would call it graphics accelerators, sound cards etc. And these, in a decent typical PC, should be balanced. Unfortunately it seems Amiga didn´t do, (or manage) that later, having its old 8bit soundchip forinstance in Amiga 4000. Which would be like running 8bit soundblaster, in the time of 16 bit gravis etc.. It is rumoured that they did plan a 16bit chip though "Mary", but never came to release it.
When I take a gander at equipment of past and I consider say the 3DO, it was a colossal jump over the SNES for instance in taking care of surface mapping for instance, yet it's 2D capacities were route lower than the SNES as SSF2T demonstrated (less parallax looking in settings) and Jez San was vocal about. The PlayStation, incredible as it was as far as 3D, couldn't coordinate the Saturn in 2D, so there dependably appeared to be a compromise made someplace.
