It must have been a format worth keeping as it literally lasted 31 years: http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forum ... n/2032769/

The holy grail must be to find an even later production model like that one. It's poss mind you but hardly cheap. Hey no: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pioneer-DVL-9 ... 1c368efebc

I'm seriously tempted anyway.

And I'm bidding for that NOW 2. Unfortunately, the four side affair is only the vinyl job. Though you do still get excellent fidelity on the VHS HiFi soundtrack, which must never be forgotten. That's half the reason I buy an old tape.

And who knows, A Mary Pickford disc could yield a few good organ samples, in that lovely creamy LD goodness.

Does it do widescreen properly?

Well 'properly' hasn't meant the same over the years, hence the 1990s VCD habit of stretched movies on 'box' tellies. If the films are formatted in the right aspect to start with then they should do well on your 4:3 viewer, which most of us had.

And it's also nice to be told my own model, by 1994, was maybe the best since the format began. Which probably also means one of the best ever, if I don't want kinky extras like AC3 audio output: http://www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/laser ... d-d925.htm

Though I'm still chasing that 1998 model.

Would it do widescreen on a modern telly?

Absolutely no reason why not. LD movies' aspect ratios are either 'normal', anamorphic or widescreen but your telly's automatic ratio setting should work with that.

Funny, Commie. I own the exact same model. It had a tray-within-tray that could pick up audio CDs.

Chris, mind that the optical resolution of LaserDiscs is lower than DVD (576 × ~570 for PAL).

Does that mean that LDs look bad on modern TVs like old computer consoles do?

By no means. Just of course the picture can look softer than the hi-res digital material they're designed for. But then, anything interlaced PAL will look a little softer. Though warmer.

Oh yes, warmer.

And I should have that lovely brushed aluminium one as a spare, since I won the bid. Though magazines said the quality was only middling, that's still 'only' in the 1998 top end sense, so I still expect much from it.

And for a bit of second childhood, the Sooty Show. Back when it was funny.

I've still got some Matthew episodes and they are better than you remember. Like when Matthew said 'I'm going to show them my bonzai', Sweep squeaks back that perhaps he should leave the room.

Just the thing when that LD player has to go back.

They will certainly be quite blurry, so yes, my guess is that it'll look bad, especially compared to BluRay.

Oh no, don't say blurry! That makes it sound faulty.

I prefer softer, as 'blurry' implies no definition or ghosting and things like that. Take it from me there's definition enough to keep LD a pleasant watch on big scale tellies. Even my VGA screen's nice.

Apparently, there's a difference between the movie edition and the music edition.

Back when he wasn't quite so weird. And I like the software with this:

But while I'm in my kick, I'm gonna favour Laser Disc. It even smells of chemicals, or at least mine still do. The pong of science. Weird as that is, too.

And I should also look for Delta Force with Chuck Norris. Not on Ebay now, but should be at one point.
