Yeah, I should have added that, IMHO, if it was a workable idea, it would have been done by now.

Maybe a project for the birthday boy, Waz?

It would be a very long project to undertake, and as Kenz already mentioned, although there are a considerable number of good SID tunes that deserve the real treatment (my own Sadness of Text for one, you really need a real C64 with 6581 only for it) there's also some which don't cut the mustard - and it'd be pure painful to listen to, never mind record. And you'd have to really do them all on one 64 with 6581, one with 8580, and use those two 64s throughout. A very scary prospect.

Even only taking into account one subtune of a SID, if you're looking at most likely 30,000 next HVSC update I reckon, and multiply that by an average of 3 minutes, that's 90,000 minutes, or 62 and a half days continuous. Ouch.

Hence my idea for the Worst SIDs volume 2 Show I had a while back (see SlayRadio forum for more info :))

Just a quick update on this one ... The CD-ROM is coming together really nicely. It's about 75% complete and the SID music sounds superb in mp3 format (there's NO quality loss as each track is being encoded at the maximum quality settings). More details (and hopefully the CD-ROM itself) will be released this weekend! :D

I want a copy of that baby for a secret world-domination project. E-mail me. =)

There's always quality loss with MP3, its a lossy format. Of course it may be good enough. And being popular and widespred is, I gather, the reason why vorbis was not chosen.

You really can't HEAR any loss with the tracks on my CD-ROM though - they sound absolutely pin sharp due to minimal compression. :)

Perhaps I can, perhaps I can't. But regardless - the minimal difference is not important - SID is not exactly soft on the ears as it is. I just wanted to comment on the "no quality loss" part.

No worries, I should have used the word 'discernible' in my description. :)

It's DONE!! The order page is now online - I'll also be adding a few sound samples to it soon - but for now have a peep!

PURE 6581 NOW AVAILABLE!

Oh yeah, I'll also add a .txt file you can download with a complete track-listing of the CD-ROM - as soon as I can figure out an easy way of generating one!

A simple directory listing could be done by:

dir /a:-d /o:n /b /s *.mp3 > textfilename.txt

Or maybe you could use the ID3 tags to generate the text file?

I gave Pure 6581 the first test run in my car this morning and hit the RANDOM button on my mp3 player on the way to work. FANTASTIC!! The SID tunes sound great being belted from my big-assed speakers in the back of the car - Matt Gray stuff sounded particularly nice! The collection works really well in random mode as you don't know what's going to play next - I'm not sure what the people stuck in the early morning traffic must have thought of the SID tunes blaring from my lil' blue ship!

If you've ordered a copy of Pure 6581 then the first bundle will be posted tomorrow so you should receive it on Saturday if you are in the UK.

I'll post some mp3 clips and the CD content listing on the order page when I get home from work tonight. 8)

Good job, that man. Ordered my copy a few minutes ago. Saves me having to record tunes from SIDPlay for use on the podcast. Plus it just feels wrong to play stuff recorded off an emulator when you can have the real thing. :D

Your CD-ROM is on its way Jan. :)

I've now updated the Pure 6581 page with a .txt list of the mp3s that are featured on the CD-ROM. Go see!

Edit: Some mp3's from the CD-ROM are now online too! :w00t:
