Hello! Seeing as there are one or two SID fans here(!), I figured I'd mention Retro Gamer 71 has a rather chunky SID feature by yours truly. It has a round-table discussion with a dozen people, including Mr Martin Walker (in, I think, his first interview for the mag). The mag in question's the one with a rather large After Burner logo on the cover.

Shhhhhhhhhhhh!!! No spoiling the surprise :) Issue 71 hasnt arrived here yet :)

We dont have anything like Retro Gamer in Canada, so I dont read about it online till it actuall arrives in the mail, I then pace myself reading it through the month.

I do have a couple of issues missing, since there was shipping errors and they dont re-ship issues rather extended the subscription by 1 issue.

Looking forward to reading about the SID in Issue 71 when it arrives. :)

Found out about this from Anna Black this morning, and thought that I'd give it a skip since charging £3.50 to have a 5 quid mag shipped within the EU kinda offends me. But that all vanished when I read that they got hold of Martin Walker. :D

The only place I can get RG here is at Large chain book stores at $22 + Tax so around $25.

So I actually save every year and subscribe which is still not cheap, for what it costs me to subscribe to RG I can buy a Wii console.

@Jan Lund Thomsen: regarding postage, it's a fairly heavy mag. When I posted copies to some ex-Atari people in the US, it cost almost a fiver per issue for airmail.

As for Martin, I was expecting a no, since he declined previous interview requests. But the fact this was about music rather than gaming piqued his interest. Of the interviewees, he was one of those who provided more content than most. Nice chap, too.

Just finished reading the article, very interesting!

Like seeing the different viewpoints , some love the fact people like SIDs still and others think its a bit silly etc.

I found a copy on Ebay, which turned out to be lucky after missing the issue's original sale. Even with postage, I got it for about a Pound or so less than I would have done.

These were the guys who were both programmers and musicians, which meant that both musician and computer had an influence on the finished music.

I do think it's a pity that MIDI synthesiser software wasn't available in the heyday, though the MIDI carts were. Imagine the doodles these guys could have made whilst having tunes take their early shapes.

It would have been SID. Programs such as My MIDI, or the synthesiser module in the MSSIAH, allows the C64's sound chip to be played in realtime by the user.
