Suicide Express - arranged by BaR

Review by rafael, 03/05/2003

From the current batch of remixes, this one by BaR seemed to inspire me the most really. Ok, most people know that I'm a big fan of trance and dance orientated tracks (yes, in spite of my own work!) and actually, this sounds a lot like the Blade Runner trance mix from the charts a few years back.

The instruments usd are typical trance sets, yet they're implemented well and there is a dance-y atmosphere there for sure. Judging from the overall sound, well, it sounds a little like a pure Reason mix, which is not a bad thing - a great tool I haven't used myself before though.

Antony Crother's original Sid tune has been ported nicely, regardless of it's simple melody and it brings out the best flavour. All in all, I think I can sum up this remix like this: If you like trance stuff, download it. There's no big effects, no overwhelming oooh moments, the remix is just nice, nothing more and nothing less. Which is ok, because I'm in the mood for it. Nice work BaR.

Wizball High Score (Sax Solo) - arranged by markg

Review by ferris, 02/05/2003

Is it just me or is the saxophone out of tune? It sounds flat to me, however great idea… a bit more could have been done with the backing, it sounded a bit lame. Nice interpretation with the lead part, this could have been something really special…

Wizball (Electronica) - arranged by Gustav Taxén

Review by tom, 01/05/2003

Well, this would have been a great Introduction for any C64-remix tune… But since there is really NOT ANY WIZBALL in it at all, it get's a very green face from me as well!!

Lightforce (another Lightforce mix) - arranged by J Lof

Review by andy, 28/04/2003

Being a big fan of the original 7 minute piece I much prefer to hear Lightforce in it's complete form. This remix is good but it misses out some good sections of the original piece. My favourite Lightforce mix is the Allister Brimble one because it's very faithfull to the original version I loved as a kid.

Delta (Mario edit) - arranged by Cicalone

Review by meletta, 27/04/2003

Sometimes minimalistic is a way to intensify.
Piano (and guitar too) is the best choice to make a melody pure, even if it is not unplugged.
Mario edit is of course a nostalgic and commemorative name, not only for fans.
Download it and try not to carouse.

International Karate (Tasty Dance Mix) - arranged by Yzi

Review by foppy, 25/04/2003

I believe this is actually the second part of the original International Karate tune. As you would manage to stay in the running for long enough, the music, slower at first, would change into this more lively song, a real reward! The remix being close to the original is good; I like the melody a lot with its large number of mini-melodies. The drums make it even better. A great remix, one of my favourites!

Poseidon: Planet Eleven - arranged by Amp

Review by Tas, 22/04/2003

I'm very curious of AMP, he's knocked up some really good remixes in the past and has some nifty ways of aproaching things. This remix is rather strange as it uses some unusual sounds, it's kinda like orchestral electrnonica mixed with an 80's beat. a rather unusual blend which works very well. Yes, why follow conventions when sometimes the best results are breaking the boundries.

The lead instrument works very well, giving an unusual picture. However at times i feel the strings in the background are too electronic and rough, here a more orchestral string might have given it a smoother and less mangled feel, but what ever a more subtle string section was much more called for.

However saying that, it's another great tune and remix from AMP, good effort

Target Renegade (Level 1) - arranged by Clayton Marsland

Review by staffs, 22/04/2003

Being the brother of Clayton I'll pick this to pieces.

Generally I was pleased with the overall sound. Driving guitar,
easy dance beat and was fairly well produced. Although he could have spent
a bit more time on it.
The 'Sid type' sound which provided the main melody line of the song let
the arrangement down considerably. It seemed to take the life away from the
punching original sid. The drive of the rest of the instruments was there.
Perhaps a guitar line melody throughout the song would have been more appropriate, with some sort of phaser effect perhaps.

I did love the 'Brian May' type guitar orchestration which he seems to do
quite well usually.
Unfortunately when the MIDI drums were being recorded, they occasionally
went out of time. I noticed this a lot towards the end of the song.

Doesn't quite make me want to grab my baseball bat and start roaming the
streets. It is better than some of his other efforts I've heard, which incidently did make me want to grab a baseball bat and have it roam around
his face.
Overall a good job but hoping for artistic improvement next time. Keep
an eye out for a joint venture between us… A remix of 'Speedball'

Miss ParkPatrol takes a Break (feat.Elsa Persson) - arranged by Mahoney

Review by craigg, 22/04/2003

Another typically quirky remix finds its way from Mahoney's warped brain to RKO. I'm not sure what's in the water where he lives, but I'm sure we'd all like some of it… Anyway, Park Patrol is on a mission to funk, with its catchy riff rendered in warbly female vocals, occasionally giving way to a crunchy rendition of Breakdance. It breaks lots of rules, and shouldn't work, but it does. It's catchy, toe-tapping stuff, which will have lovers of straightforward SID remixes running for the hills and everyone else wondering what on earth they just heard, before wanting to hear it again, just one more time…

Target Renegade (Level 1) - arranged by Clayton Marsland

Review by craigg, 22/04/2003

Once in a while a remix comes along that manages to succeed for me, despite the lack of nostalgia. While not being all that familiar with the original, I enjoyed listening to Marsland's effort all the same. The build into the main part of the piece seems almost filmic, and works well, with elements being gradually introduced to the mix. Wisely, he then chooses to offset the complex, 'noodly' lead with a relentless, engrossing beat, which rapidly becomes hypnotic and seems to hold the piece together. It would be all too easy to drag this track on and on, but it ends at a suitable 'pop' 3:15 before it's in any danger of becoming dull. Recommended.

Last Ninja 2 - The Basement - arranged by Dave Brybe

Review by craigg, 22/04/2003

While it may not have been to everyone's taste, Zombie Nation at least proved that competent, mainstream dance remixes of C64 tunes are perhaps the way to commercial viability. This mix sits squarely in the same field--a fast, energetic techno tune, which would not be out of place in clubs across the land. However, in the conversion to this style, the piece has lost most of the soul of the original. Dance music aficionados will most likely lap this up, but stoic fans of the original SID should probably steer clear.

Target Renegade (Level 1) - arranged by Clayton Marsland

Review by maindrian, 22/04/2003

Oh my, it's really something special here.

I wont go into the technical aspect of this remix, all I know is that it sounds good. And what more could you possibly need? Some excellent guitar, a thumping beat and a classy sheen? You got it.

I was going to remix this sid myself. Consider that scrapped folks, this is the definitive version. Makes me want to roam the mean streets with a baseball bat.

Pharao (The End Mix) - arranged by trouby

Review by eliot, 22/04/2003

Hmm… why does he not mention that this remix is a cover of Charles Deenen's Ala Gal which itself is a cover of Demonic Part 1 by Neil Baldwin??? (damn, where is the smiley with the? on it's head?)

So I can not really imagine what Pharao has to do with this remix

I guess he has a lack of inspiration, because to add only some drums and baseline(s) does not fit for a remix. But he's lucky, due the fact I love Ala Gal he gets a good which he does not really deserve.

What does a heavy distorted guitar do into an romantic river epic remix?
Sadently, it infears with a really nice attempt of this tune. I guess everyone would be grateful if you will remove this junk and upload this tune again

Due this heavy distoreted guitar I can only give a good because it really ruins this tune.

Last Ninja (The Mountain) - arranged by SoA

Review by eliot, 22/04/2003

A remix should contain more than one chunk of a rememberable part of the original, I guess. This remix is in fact an own tune with 30 seconds of subtune 6 Last Ninja, quite nice, with drums not fitting.

So, I'm unsure what the arranger want to tell us, maybe he won't.

Target Renegade (Level 1) - arranged by Clayton Marsland

Review by eliot, 22/04/2003

Clayton's second attempt remixing a C64 tune is quite nice. It's very similar to the original especially the lead (instrument), with many guitars as background- and supporting-instruments giving this tune a nice punch. The drums don't vary, which is a lack indeed, also some crackles and a small stereo panorama muddy my listen experience.

Spy cello vs spy pizzi - arranged by gol

Review by eliot, 22/04/2003

Hmm… the usage of classical instruments doesn't turn a tune into Symphony, it's more Classical.

The variation of some quite unharmonic notes turns this tune unsatisfying to me, and makes me feel sad, the original doesn't.
Besides that this attempt is quite nice but nothing breath-taking with a leak of variation.

Review by eliot, 22/04/2003

Welcome to remix64 and remix. kwed. org Dave!

I can't count how many Last Ninja 2 remixes we already got here and this one goes into the wrong direction. Even done as hardcore tekkno (it's not trance ) it should remain the spirit of the original and this spirit went away It's fast, it's tekkno, but that's all, I hope Dave does better next time.

Miss ParkPatrol takes a Break (feat.Elsa Persson) - arranged by Mahoney

Review by eliot, 22/04/2003

For anyone who did not find the. sids, should take a look at the "GAMES" directory into the HVSC "A-FBreak_Dance. sid" and "M-RPark_Patrol. sid".

This "remix" is really amazing, because it honors quite unpopular. sids, I can only remember "Break Dance", "Park Patrol" left without any impression into my neural network.

Yes, I guess most people will leave this remix beside, it's really very unusual and I can imagine the many reviews explaining why it's crap
For me it's an impressive, intuitive, jazzy, powerful attempt. The only negative I can write here, are some really high frequencies hitting my ear by my headphones and I wished for a bit less volume on this percussions (that "squishes" I mean). Outstanding work anyways Pex!

Dragons Lair 2 - The Romantic River Epic - arranged by Maindrian

Review by Tas, 20/04/2003

While the original is quite upbeat maindrain attacks this piece or rather doesn't attack it, but gently brings out a softer side to the remix. Well thats until 2:39 where he brings in a distorted guitar which unfortunately kills the piece. This addition ruins what would have been an awesome remix. Fortunately it last for only 1 minuite before normal service resumes.

The track which yet again bares simularities to early Mike Oldfield is beautiful and emotional. A great piece of work which is sadly let down by that oh so unwarrented harsh distorted guitar. Shame really, because if it wasn't for that i could play it all day on repeat.

Dragons Lair 2 - The Romantic River Epic - arranged by Maindrian

Review by immacolata, 19/04/2003

I think Maindrian is the new guy on the block with a guitar. Sounds like a classic rock ballad, with a very familiar drum beat going and some nice silent guitar work. Close to the 3 minute mark there's use of some phat distorted guitar, but well laid upon the other guitars. At the end, the song is as beautifully mellow as it was for starters.

I like this remix a lot better than the first attempt at Dragon's Lair 2 that Maindrian tried. I like it as much as Maindrians Times of Lore remix, it has the same melancholic mood to it, but this song is made entirely on real instruments, no SID usage. I look forward to see him giving more songs his great guitar treatment. If you missed out on his Times of Lore, go get it.

Shadow Skimmer - arranged by Markus Schneider

Review by rafael, 17/04/2003

Well Markus my friend, this is an awesome feat. I have to be honest when I say that I - although I very much adore symphonic scores - am not a total fan of the current orchestral sounds. Anyone who knows my stuff knows I prefer the poppy, electronic path. For me, a movie score should have some synthetic features like drumloops or synth effects. Just listen to Gregson-William's Shrek or MGS2 on Playstation2. Anyway, that's just my preference.

Needless to say, the orchestration here is awesome nonetheless. Markus has been improving with each remix. It's hard work getting that feel of the real orchestra in there. The track lacks a little progression in my view but with the overall tension and atmosphere in it, symphonic fans will get a huge kick out of it. This review may actually sound a bit negative, but it's not meant that way. In fact, I urge you: Download it and weep. I know I did.

Last Ninja (The Wilderness) - arranged by Cytex

Review by Yoshi, 16/04/2003

In my opinion, one of the better Last Ninja remixes so far. I don't like the sounds in the original tune, but this cover, if I may call it that, has the great melody of the original and a very good sound that makes the tune enjoyable.
I hope to see more of Cytex's work in the future.

Athena (Jazzoids Bjork like remix) - arranged by Jazzoid

Review by maindrian, 15/04/2003

I'm incredibly impressed by this remix. Emotional, epic and thouroughly stirring.

The title is justified, as the remix does have the feel of a Bjork track and as a fan of the artist myself, I wouldnt accept anything less. However it also evokes the original sid incredibly well. The whole thing makes me want to blow the dust off of my old copy of Post.

A well put together track indeed. Kudos Jazzoid.
