Ice age VS Gaplus (Preview) remix

Post by stainlesssteel »

Hey Y´all

This one got rejected on RKO for reasons unknown.
I personally think its not the worst remake ive done. I would like to hear some other opinions. maybe it did just suck and therefore got rejected.

Dont be fooled by the "Preview" in the name. I was actually finished working on it (though it could have needed some more backgrounds)

It "preview" because parts of the music was taken from the "Gaplus Preview" music by JT. The final Gaplus ingame music was completly reworked by JT and this one was never used.

It's OK, but it is not the most amazing remix I have heard. It does need a lot of filling out with background sounds. I quite liked the Out Run samples in there, but why does it stop so abruptly?

The feeling on my
side is that the cover consists of these parts, from my listening ear vantage point:

1) A bass instrument mirroring the C64 bass but not sounding as good
2) The C64 drums from the SID here and there
3) The C64 lead (effected, but obviously a sample from the SID, you can tell by the pulse width modulation).
4) A drum loop
5) Occasional other vocal sample sample

Given that, there's not an awful lot there. Now, improve that bass by using
a better instrument, giving it some sub-bass and taking off that cavernous
reverb, add in some rhythmic or arpeggiated stabs, FX those SID drums,
put some pads in, and you'd be talking. As it is, it's a very basic bare track which needs a decent bass/drum groove and lots of ornamentation.
Even with these additions it would probably only be a 65-70% track on RKO, since the source material is tuneful but bland.

Seems like Quadrasid fooled you there.
I really didnt use any samples for the synths.
The only samples taken directly from the sid are the snare,
the outrun voices and another one then loaded into the 909.

1) A bass instrument mirroring the C64 bass but not sounding as good

Hmm, i will take that into concideration.

5) Occasional other vocal sample sample

Just to spice things up. actually just playing around.

I admit its a very basic track and it needs alot of work. rejection accepted.

Maybe i just enjoy listening to the orignal sids so much that i forgot about putting in some background.

btw: i _never_ sample any leads, loops or the like into my remixes. maybe a single snare or a voice occasionaly. But only single samples and then working them into the pattern.

Thanks for you time, i appreciate the feedback.
