Recording yourself while making a tune

Post by Mordi »

I saw a youtube-video of some guy recording the screen while making a song in Reason. I thought I'd do the same using FL Studio.

Youtube playlist: Making a tune using Audjoo Helix
I only recorded the first hour or so.

Maybe anyone else would be interested to do the same? Would be interesting to watch.

I did it by using these free programs:
CamStudio - to record the screen
Audacity - to record audio
Windows MovieMaker - to sync the audio + video and to render film
Check out my website.

Excellent.. Would be nice to have a Tutorial section here, with recordings of studio sessions would give an insight on how the greats here do their work, and might help others streamline workflow etc..

That would be nice indeed.

I've been looking for a more general tutorial on the basic stuff. Like, how modulation affects certain waveforms and how you can tweak a wave to make specific sounds and whatnot. I guess its the kind of thing you gotta learn from experience.

Wow, I'm awestruck.

For a layman like me it would be even better if you had a mic to record your voice and comment on what you are doing...it all goes so fast! :P

Yeah, sorry about that. I didn't want to waste time for the viewer. :p In hindsight that wasn't such a good idea, especially since the recording area is so small.

Cool 8) This Audjoo Helix looks pretty good...

I like the idea but i have to agree with Robinson that it would be much more informative if you would comment what youre doing...

I could give it a go. There are zero decent screen capture softwares for Mac that are free, but I had already plunked down for one to demonstrate my own music software.

To be honest I couldn't sit through all of Mordi's videos (but what I saw was interesting!), I think I would abridge mine. Narration is a good idea too.

cheers.

Would love to see a video of "The Alibi" while is playing in FL.

I maybe crazy or the only who thinks this way, but there is something
magical about watching a Tracker playing a tune as the patterns
and such go across the screen.

Not quite what I promised but this video does show my general sequencing process of record/edit/layer. It's general MIDI so the sounddesign/production technique is absent. But it gives you the idea.

cheers.
