Never really understood the part about variabel bitrate at mp3 encoding as that's what mp3 is all about (or I imagine :P )... It probably reduces those places the codec figures it's least needed with high bitrate and gains where hifreq's are used, but still I prefer constant bitrate at sound to avoi...
