Deserted Desert Factory map for Redneck Rampage

Post by LMan »

Heyhoy,

here's another map I made. It's based on my Duke 3D map of the same name.

Redneck Rampage was based on Duke Nukem 3D. It had some fitting textures for the look I wanted for my map. I was always trying to push the "Build" engine to its limits:

* by creating detailed objects just with the engine's walls/sectors (see the barrels and boxes in the screen shot below)
* by creating rooms-above-rooms (where you need to take great care not to have overlapping sectors visible at the same time)
* by using tricks to achieve lighting / shading effects

If you ever tried to make those things in build, you know it's not very easy to do. :)
Of course, the looks of the map is nothing compared to todays standards. But it looked pretty sophisticated back then. :)

Check it out, screenshots from DOSBox.

Stacked boxes made of wall sectors. Tricky to do in "build" games, since you basically can not stack things vertically.

Playing with drop shadows. Again, you need to do it all tricky with wall sectors.

That was a fun game... nice map, Lman!. Pretty tough to make good looking maps in Build and the limits of the engine gave often than not the hall of mirrors effect. Redneck Rampage, Duke Nukem 3D and Shadow Warrior were fun to play.
All is lost.
