Chris
I saw a very interesting documentary on the infamous K-Tel company (from back in the 70's and 80's). In order to reduce their costs, they started hiring the original artists to go back into the studio (owned by K-Tel) and re-record their songs. They produced near identical recordings which were now owned by K-Tel, eliminating the need to pay the owners of the original recordings (the other record companies).
Still happens now. The tell-tale warning on the CD is "Some of these songs have been re-recorded with as many band-members as are still alive, talking to each other, or out of rehab" :)

It seems Timbaland can't wait for his next fix of inspiration...

Great article, Chris.

One funny little thing:
ii) Maybe they thought they were re-using Timbaland's old work "Block Party", and forgot that work in itself contained infringements (this theory is given weight by the fact that the alterations to the bassline done for Block Party are the same as the ones in "Do It": this also indicates that this was not a carelessly used random WAV but a considered usage of the piece).
If they can't hear the difference on Tempest's version (ringtone) and GRG's version (Do it), perhaps music production is not really what they should be doing :)

This above article mentions "There have been mixed reactions to his guest appearance on Justin Timberlake's concert" I wonder if he is being bood on stage or something?

One other thing. I noticed any comments I post in the Timberland videos on YouTube my Comments don't appear.

I suppose, YouTube runs on more servers to distribute the "LOAD". In such solutions, one server is a "master" which has add/edit/show database and others just replicate the database and only show the content. Depending on interval of replication, your comment might appear with delay.

The story really seems to be getting around. Leading Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat reported the allegations in its culture section on Jan 20. Quoting the entire item below, translation by yours truly:

American producer suspected of stealing a Finnish song

U.S. magazine Rolling Stone has raised a suspicion in its online edition that the hit song Do It, performed by Nelly Furtado and attributed to producer Timothy Mosley a.k.a. Timbaland, was composed by Finnish Janne Suni.

In the magazine's discussion forum several people hold the opinion that the song is clearly the same composition as Acid Jazzed Evening, created by Suni on his computer in 2000. Earlier this week the controversy was reported by [Finnish tabloid] Ilta-Sanomat, in which an electronic music expert stated in an interview that when compared, the two songs proved nearly identical.

Suni has not been asked for permission to use the song, and no copyright fees have been paid to him. He gives his view of the incident at his website http://www.fairlight.fi/tempest.
