"Wings of Death" Kickstarter Fully Funded!
The crowdfunding campaign of Wings of Death - Reworked Anthology
, a project by the German Remix Group (GRG) has just ended - and we're glad to report it got fully funded! In fact, it far surpassed its original goal of €6,500, which means that there will be bonus remixes on the album by Tronimal, Nordischsound, Fabian Del Priore, Chris Hülsbeck, Barry Leitch, and Matt Gray, too! The support from the retro community has been fantastic, and the GRG is really grateful for it. Well done, fans, and congrats to the German Remix Group for the highly successful campaign!
Note: if for some reason you missed this campaign, you can still order digital downloads from the project.
25 Years Ago: The First "Back In Time Live!"
It was exactly 25 years ago on May 16, 2001 when the first Back In Time Live! event was held in a club in Birmingham. Back then many of us thought this might be our only chance to meet our heroes, the C64 musicians who enriched our lives in the 1980s, so we flocked to the place from all around the world. It was a euphoric event whose success luckily spawned many more meet-ups. So, let's get a bit teary eyed as we remember that milestone event…

Remix64 v2 - Into Eternity
by Various Artists
The original Remix64
title referred more to the community embracing the remixers than the content of the CD. And so it was that Remix64 - Into Eternity turned into a symphonic epic not a million miles away from the popular Merregnon series of CDs: there certainly is a teutonic air to much of the album. Highlights of the CD include Markus Holler's spine-tingling reworking of Fist 2
with flute and ethereal vocals, and Thomas Detert's Spellbound
which gives life to Rob Hubbard's own dark vision for the piece. Belying the computery artwork of the cover, this CD is a powerful piece of fantasy soundtrack more than it is a remix CD. Enjoy it at that level, and be blown away.
NOTE: Altough the CD album is now out of print, most of the tracks of the album have been uploaded to RKO, and they are available there for free:
Turrican 10 Anniversary edition

Last Ninja (Song 3 - The Wastelands Loader)
Arranged by SoundLogic
A piano intro in this tune would sound like a good idea, but here it sounds overly robotic, and there's absolutely no variation in it, it follows the original SID too closely. The singing synth that comes on top of it sounds too cheezy to me, but it's oh-kay.
Now, the introduction of the vaguely Asian sounding instruments at 0:45 perked me up - my only wish is if you went all-in with that idea. These instruments sound too synthy, with very little to zero articulation and ornamentation in them. A great idea, but a missed opportunity, me thinks.
The piccolo at 2:17 sounds better, but again - it sounds a bit too synthy, and not very interesting.
Overall, I think the basic idea behind this arrangement was good, but the instrumentation is too stiff and synthy, which is why it doesn't quite work for me.
