Jan Hammer lead instrument...

Post by skitz »

Fellow remixers,

I am trying to locate a softsynth that can simulate the lead "bell" type synth that Mr Hammer used in his Crockett's theme. It's for a remix I am working on which is simply crying out to be done in this style and I think this lead sound is critical to it working.

The electric guitar sound is no problem and I have that already in a number of softsynths - it' just that lovely "Bell" lead he uses that escapes me at the moment :(

Thanks in advance..

When was it released? 1985... My money's on it being a Yamaha DX7 patch, so try Native Instrument's FM7 vst.

If you're a poor bugger (like me) try the free DSDXI2 or Synth 1 (both have FM functions). Either of those should be able to make it without too much trouble.

Tonka is on the money.

A good friend of mine had a Yamaha DX7 back in the 80's and as part of the default patches there were a few bell sounds and one of them was exactly the same as the one featured on that track.

Thanks Tonka / Analog-X,

It is indeed a DX7 patch and I do have NI-FM7 :) However, it needs a little layering to make it sound as FWABBY(tm) as Jan's one :)

While at work today... I also remembered, there was a Game on the Amiga that had that Bell sound.. which you could probably use.. but it would be lower quality.

Yeah - Wasn't it 'F14 Simulator', or something like that? It's on the 'Top Gun' (film) soundtrack too, which is the reason they used it in that game, I guess...

My old Casiotone CT-660 keyboard has a sound called "Elec Piano" that comes pretty close to Jan Hammer's lead sound in Crockett's Theme.
