Chris Abbott: Back In Time 4 - Sidventure

Welcome to Back in Time 4: Sidventure, part of the 8-Bit Symphony series of projects. It’s a series of symphonic tales, told with passion.

I planned Back in Time 4, 5 and 6 two decades ago to take over from where Back in Time 3 left off. It was always planned that they’d be largely symphonic, but it took a while (and many twists and turns) for reality to catch up.

This series of CDs contains computer-based performances of arrangements from the 8-Bit Symphony project. I used mostly VSTs from Orchestral Tools with additional libraries from Spitfire Audio, 8Dio, Impact Soundworks and Embertone. These were all integrated into Sibelius, and the scores were then marked up for realism (this is where the art comes in!). After that, they were output into Cubase where they were timing-corrected, enhanced with light reverb, mixed, and then rendered. The CD was co-produced by Kenneth Slaygon Mutka who worked closely on this project since its inception, and without whom it wouldn’t exist. Many of the production ideas are his.

Arrangements were created by myself, Rob Hubbard, Gari Biasillo, Alisdair J. Pickering, Ben Daglish, Paul Norman, Peter Connelly, Julian Breeze, Alistair Boz Bowness, Marcel Donné. They were orchestrated by Rob, Alisdair and 8-Bit Symphony conductor Robin Tate.

Big thanks to Back in Time Symphonic Collection Kickstarter backers for their patience!

This project is of course dedicated to the memories of Ben Daglish and Richard Joseph. They would have got a kick out of all this.

Instant Remedy: M1x3d Up

The album is more of an extended EP and not a full album since it only has 8 tracks. Some of the tracks are old remixes which never made it to commercial platforms but by working out the copyright stuff and remastering them now have found a way to your favorite streaming service. 4 of the tracks are original compositions I made some years ago which I remixed/remastered to make them fit your ears better. Although the styles of the tracks are a bit m1x3d (hence the album name), the primary direction of the sound is a classic 90’s dance style with SID sounds and crispy arp chords – the classic IR sound. This is what I think most fans will appreciate.

PRESS PLAY ON TAPE: HOME COMPUTER

PRESS PLAY ON TAPE: Home Computer

PRESS PLAY ON TAPE are legends. This is their third studio CD, and it's a doozy, combining kick-your-bottom C64 remixes with original brain-beatingly good tracks. Although obliterated from Wikipedia by pedants who can't cope with reality, there's no keeping these guys down! Rock on!! 26 tracks of mayhem, a double CD, over 2 hours of music! Comes with a 32 page souvenir booklet, packed with photos of Soren. And some other guys, not sure who they are, but they look dodgy to me... *hehe* This album is not available to buy from us digitally, only from iTunes, but FLAC and MP3 Album packs are downloadable when you purchase the CD. * Note: all preorders have now been sent out * PPOT delivers exactly what is expected of them, and their fans will love this CD. New fans will without doubt take it to their hearts too, because no matter if you're a fan of vocals on remixes or not, there's plenty of music to enjoy. - Andreas Wallstrom, C64.com

Necropolo: raKBIT

NecroPolo: RAKBIT

NecroPolo has produced a stunning album which is built on a vintage prog-sound: from hard as nails to Rhodes-heaven, NecroPolo has got beneath the skin of the pieces and created something which is totally authentic to their spirit.
As if that wasn't enough, this album features the first ever C64-executable album cover, complete with classic scrolltext and the original SIDs that appear on the album, in one PRG!
And if THAT wasn't enough, this demo contains the first ever usage of a revolutionary new SID encoding format which enables any complexity of SID to be played back with minimal raster time, no matter how complex the player! Named SIDRIP, this routine was produced by Hermit specially for this demo, because pieces such as Scoll Machine or Rimrunner needed to feature in this demo, and their players were far too difficult to squeeze into a one-file demo.

8 Bit Weapon: Confidential 2.0

8-Bit Weapon: 8BW Confidential 2.0 Limited Edition

8-Bit Weapon's trademark SID 'n Drums is here, for those who wish remixes had more of that powerful SID sound, and less faffing about 😊 Seth Sternberger is an experienced live performer who's done Las Vegas and London, and is currently being marketed by Nokia: normally his sound is more eclectically 8-bit, but here he's targeted his favourite SIDs and put his imprint on them, to great effect. The album is available as a digital album in FLAC and MP3 (note the whole album download), but 64 limited edition signed and numbered copies in a 5.25 disk sleeve are available too. Highlights of the album include the trippy Acidgroove", and the epic Times of Lore main theme which apparently took two weeks just mastering!

Remix64 V3 Syntax Era

Remix64 Team: Syntax Era - Remix64 Volume 3

Pure Geek-cheek! Take famous 80s tracks such as 19, Two Tribes, Too Shy, Billy Jean, Broken Wings and I Feel Love, painstakingly recreate the sound, and inject that into classic C64 music such as BMX Kidz, Comic Bakery, Sanxion, Arkanoid and Ghouls and Ghosts. Remixes come from amazing talent: Romeo Knight, LMan, Makke, Tom Detert, Tron, Moog, Binster, Ziphoid, Boz, Sonic Wanderer, Tonka, Skitz, Trace, Slaygon, iFadeo and even (gasp) a guest appearances here and there from Chris Abbott. You'll wonder how we could get away with such a cheeky tribute to the 80s: well, no samples from the original tracks were used, and the musical content has been replaced by the C64 tune covered. The CD also features some really great songs in their own right, which result from a perfect match between C64 melodies and hooks, the sound of SID, and classic 80s instrumentation, such as Ace II, Jethro Walrus, Aspar Grand Prix, and Dominator. The CD was the baby of Markus LMan Klein, who acted as Co-ordinator, remixer, artist and layout, and even made his own tea, ably assisted by Tom Detert who did much of the mastering. CD is in now shipping! Tracks are available in high quality VBR MP3 and FLAC (all non-DRM).

FTC - 01:04 Eternal

FTC: 1:04 Eternal

FTC is one of my favourite remixers, and I'm proud to present the first Album in Progress at C64Audio.com. This is the starting point for FTC's album. The headline tracks will be re-recorded and remixed over time by me, and you'll have access to them automatically (at no extra charge) when they appear. Although some of FTC's work is chaotic, at its best, it evokes the spirit of late-night coding, and sometimes even a sinister Richard Carpenter vibe: at other times, it takes a portion of a SID and skews it so far that it turns into a beautiful piece of art. These are remixes in the true sense of the word. And: the most important thing: FTC has his own sound, and his own style. Even more impressive, his original stuff is as good as his SID covers. And sometimes better 😊 Keep following this one: buy into it now, download the many pieces on the CD and the bonuses (FTC produced many tracks that didn't get to RKO), and enjoy!

Remix64 Volume 2: Into Eternity

Various Artists: Remix64 - Into Eternity

The original Remix64 title referred more to the community embracing the remixers than the content of the CD. And so it was that Remix64 - Into Eternity turned into a symphonic epic not a million miles away from the popular Merregnon series of CDs: there certainly is a teutonic air to much of the album. Highlights of the CD include Markus Holler's spine-tingling reworking of Fist 2 with flute and ethereal vocals, and Thomas Detert's Spellbound which gives life to Rob Hubbard's own dark vision for the piece. Belying the computery artwork of the cover, this CD is a powerful piece of fantasy soundtrack more than it is a remix CD. Enjoy it at that level, and be blown away.

This CD is the only remix CD on this page where almost all of the remixes were done by the composer of the original. There's a much clearer sense, here, of how the composer meant the original to be. Chris Abbott and Alistair Bowness (Boz): Karma64

This CD is really four albums in one. First, it presents dance versions of popular C64 tunes which were first put together to be played at the very first Back in Time live event. Second, it presents what we regard as the ultimate versions of tunes which first featured on Back in Time 1, such as Crazy Comets, or Monty on the Run. Third, it brings a new and experimental vibe to some popular pieces like Wizball and Mutants. And lastly, it is a testing ground for some of the ear-candy New Age ideas that later found their way into Crystal Dreamscapes.
